Halo teman-teman semua!

The Window Problem

Kalau kalian lihat, lokasi ini menghadap jendela besar (Sayap Suci). Ini sebenarnya challenging karena:

  • ❌ Face window = Subject backlit (silhouette)
  • ❌ Direct sunlight = Harsh shadows, inconsistent exposure
  • ❌ Weather dependent = Mendung tiba-tiba, lighting berubah

Part 1: Lighting Setup (Aputure 300C + Softbox)

Main Light: Aputure 300C

Lampu yang kita pakai adalah Aputure 300C.

Specs:

  • Power output: 300 watt (cukup powerful untuk nandingin matahari)
  • Type: COB LED (Chip-on-Board)
  • Color temperature: Bi-color (adjustable 3200K-5600K)
  • CRI/TLCI: 96+ (accurate color reproduction)

[Insert image: Aputure 300C with Light Dome II softbox positioned at 45° angle to subjects, showing power and diffusion]

Modifier: Softbox (Light Dome)

Kita pakai softbox di depan Aputure 300C.

Kenapa Softbox?

Benefit softbox:

  • Soft, diffused light – No harsh shadows di wajah talent
  • Large light source – Wrap around subject lebih natural
  • Consistent output – Tidak terpengaruh cuaca/waktu
  • Flattering untuk portrait – Even skin tones, minimal blemishes

Lighting Position dan Setup

Placement:

  • Position: 45° dari subject (classic Rembrandt/loop lighting)
  • Height: Slightly above eye level, angled down
  • Distance: 2-3 meter dari talent (tergantung space)
  • Power: 80-100% (untuk compete dengan window light)
[Insert image: Top-down lighting diagram showing Aputure 300C placement at 45° angle, softbox modifier, and light falloff pattern on two subjects]

Lighting Setup Summary

Component Product Purpose Price Range
Main Light Aputure 300C Key light, compete dengan sunlight ~Rp 10-12 juta
Modifier Light Dome II (or similar softbox) Diffuse light, eliminate harsh shadows ~Rp 3-4 juta
Stand Heavy-duty C-stand Support 300C + modifier weight ~Rp 1-2 juta

Part 2: Audio Setup (Shure SM7B + Rode Caster Pro 2)

Microphone: Shure SM7B (Industry Standard)

Kenapa SM7B?

Shure SM7B adalah broadcast standard untuk podcasting:

  • ✅ Used by: Joe Rogan, Lex Fridman, Tim Ferriss, semua podcast besar
  • Dynamic mic – Excellent noise rejection (tidak pickup background noise)
  • Warm, smooth vocal – Flattering untuk speech
  • Built-in pop filter – Minimize plosives (P, B sounds)
  • Durable – Tank-like build quality

SM7B Specs:

[Insert image: Close-up of Shure SM7B mounted on Elgato boom arm with windscreen and pop filter visible, positioned near talent’s mouth]

Boom Arm: Elgato Wave Mic Arm LP

Kita pakai boom arm dari Elgato.

“Ini dari Elgato ya? Iya, Elgato—El Gato gitu. Ini namanya Elgato. Terus kalian harus pakai boom arm biar tidak ‘gato-gato’ (goyang-goyang).”

Why Boom Arm?

  • Flexible positioning – Easy adjust jarak mic ke mulut (optimal: 5-10cm)
  • Desk space saving – Tidak makan space di meja
  • Reduce handling noise – Isolated dari desk vibrations
  • Professional look – Clean, minimal visual clutter

Recommended boom arms:

  • Elgato Wave Mic Arm LP – ~Rp 2 juta (excellent cable management)
  • Rode PSA1+ – ~Rp 1.8 juta (classic, reliable)

[Insert image: Elgato boom arm cable management detail showing internal cable routing and clean aesthetic]

Audio Interface: Rode Caster Pro 2

Untuk audio interface, kita pakai Rode Caster Pro 2.

Kenapa Harus Pakai Mixer?

Rode Caster Pro 2 Features:

  • 4 XLR inputs – Support sampai 4 hosts/guests
  • Built-in preamps – Powerful gain untuk SM7B (yang notoriously low output)
  • Sound pads – 8 programmable buttons untuk sound effects, intro music, dll.

Monitoring Headphones: Audio-Technica ATH-M50x

Untuk monitoring audio, kita pakai Audio-Technica ATH-M50x.

Why ATH-M50x?

Purpose monitoring headphones:

  • Real-time audio check – Dengar exactly apa yang terekam
  • Catch issues early – Noise, clipping, mic position problems
  • Level monitoring – Ensure proper gain staging
  • Isolated listening – No bleed into mics

Alternative monitoring headphones:

  • Audio-Technica ATH-M50x – ~Rp 2.5 juta (industry standard)
  • Sony MDR-7506 – ~Rp 2 juta (broadcast classic)
  • Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro – ~Rp 2.8 juta (comfort for long sessions)
[Insert image: Audio operator wearing ATH-M50x headphones while monitoring levels on Rode Caster Pro 2 during podcast recording]

Audio Workflow: Critical Steps

CRITICAL AUDIO WORKFLOW:

  1. Before talent arrives:
    • Test all mics (cek levels, no clipping)
    • MUTE semua channels (jangan lupa!)
    • Set preliminary gain (biasanya 60-70% untuk SM7B)
  2. Saat talent masuk studio:
    • Keep muted! Jangan lupa pencet merah (mute button)
    • Mic tetap off sampai ready recording
    • Avoid catching private conversation/chatter
  3. Saat mulai recording:
    • Countdown: “Recording in 3, 2, 1…”
    • UNMUTE channels
    • Naikkan gain kalau perlu (monitor levels di -12dB to -6dB range)
  4. During recording:
    • Monitor levels constantly (prevent clipping > 0dB)
    • Adjust gain kalau talent speaking too soft/loud
    • Watch for background noise (AC, traffic, etc.)

Part 3: Camera Setup (3-Angle Blackmagic Configuration)

Why 3-Camera Setup?

3-angle configuration adalah standard untuk professional podcast:

  1. Wide shot (Establishing) – Context, both talents visible
  2. Medium shot (Two-shot atau single) – Conversation dynamics
  3. Close-up (Tight portrait) – Emotion, reaction shots

Editing Flexibility:

  • Coverage – Never “stuck” dengan boring single angle
  • Reaction shots – Capture both speaker dan listener expressions
  • Repurpose untuk shorts – Close-up footage perfect untuk vertical format
[Insert image: Three-camera setup overview showing wide, medium, and close-up angles positioned around podcast table with sight lines and framing indicated]

Camera Bodies: Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera

Kita pakai Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera untuk semua 3 angles.

Why Blackmagic for Podcasts?

  • Cinematic image – Film-like aesthetic (bukan video look)
  • Blackmagic RAW – Massive color grading flexibility
  • Dual native ISO – Clean low light performance (400 & 3200)
  • Professional codecs – ProRes, BRAW
  • Affordable – Cinema quality tanpa RED/ARRI pricing

Recommended Blackmagic models untuk podcast:

Model Sensor Best For Price
BMPCC 6K Pro Super 35 (6K) Best overall, internal ND, tilt screen ~Rp 35 juta
BMPCC 6K G2 Super 35 (6K) Budget option, excellent image ~Rp 28 juta
BMPCC 4K MFT (4K) Most affordable, smaller lenses ~Rp 18 juta

Part 4: Lens Configuration (Strategic Focal Length Choices)

Angle 1 – Wide Shot: Sigma 24-35mm f/2 Art

Untuk wide shot-nya, saya rekomendasikan pakai Sigma 24-35mm f/2 Art.

Why This Lens for Wide?

Karena ini lumayan sharp dan kalian bisa pakai f/2.8 sampai f/4—masih dapat depth tapi everything in focus (both talents sharp).

Wide shot lens criteria:

  • Focal length: 24-35mm – Enough width untuk frame both talents + background
  • Aperture: f/2.8-f/4 – Adequate depth of field (don’t need f/1.4 untuk wide)
  • Sharpness – Edge-to-edge sharpness important untuk establishing shot

Wide Shot Lens Alternatives:

Lens Focal Length Aperture Price
Sigma 24-35mm f/2 Art 24-35mm (versatile range) f/2 (bright, sharp wide open) ~Rp 15 juta
Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 Art 18-35mm (APS-C, wider) f/1.8 (excellent low light) ~Rp 12 juta
Canon 24-70mm f/2.8 24-70mm (zoom flexibility) f/2.8 (constant aperture) ~Rp 25 juta
[Insert image: Wide shot example from podcast setup showing both talents in frame with background depth, shot at f/2.8-f/4 on 24-35mm lens]

Angle 2 – Medium Shot: 24-70mm (Zoomed to ~70mm)

Our Setup:

Why 70mm for Medium Shot?

  • Compression – Background lebih compressed (bokeh lebih smooth)
  • Flattering perspective – No wide-angle distortion di wajah
  • Isolate subject – Easier separate talent dari background
  • Flexibility – Zoom in/out untuk adjust framing tanpa move camera

Medium shot lens options:

  • Canon/Sony 24-70mm f/2.8 – ~Rp 20-25 juta (versatile workhorse)
  • Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 – ~Rp 10 juta (budget-friendly, excellent quality)
  • Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 Art – ~Rp 18 juta (sharp, heavy build)
[Insert image: Medium shot (two-shot) example at 70mm showing both talents with compressed background bokeh and flattering perspective]

Angle 3 – Close-Up: Sigma 50-100mm f/1.8 Art

Untuk close-up, kita pakai Sigma 50-100mm f/1.8 Art.

Our Configuration:

Why Longer Focal Length for Close-Up?

Ideal focal length untuk portrait/close-up: 85-135mm

  • Maximum compression – Smooth, creamy bokeh
  • Flattering facial proportions – No distortion, natural look
  • Subject isolation – Talent “pop” dari background
  • Cinematic depth – Shallow DOF at f/1.8-f/2.8

Recommended Portrait Lenses untuk Close-Up:

Lens Focal Length Best Feature Price
Sigma 50-100mm f/1.8 Art 50-100mm zoom Versatile range, constant f/1.8 ~Rp 18 juta
Canon 85mm f/1.2L 85mm prime Legendary bokeh, ultra-sharp ~Rp 25 juta
Sony 85mm f/1.4 GM 85mm prime Fast AF, lightweight ~Rp 24 juta
Sigma 85mm f/1.4 Art 85mm prime Razor sharp, great value ~Rp 15 juta
Canon 135mm f/2L 135mm prime Maximum compression, “magic” lens ~Rp 18 juta
[Insert image: Close-up shot comparison showing 50mm vs 85mm vs 135mm – demonstrating compression and bokeh differences for portrait work]

Lens Configuration Summary

3-Angle Lens Setup:

Wide Shot (Camera 1):

  • Lens: 24-35mm
  • Aperture: f/2.8-f/4
  • Purpose: Establish setting, show both talents, background context

Medium Shot (Camera 2):

  • Lens: 24-70mm (zoomed to ~70mm)
  • Aperture: f/2.8-f/4
  • Purpose: Conversation coverage, two-shot atau singles with context

Close-Up (Camera 3):

  • Lens: 85-135mm (recommended) atau 50-100mm
  • Aperture: f/1.8-f/2.8
  • Purpose: Emotion, reaction shots, tight portrait dengan bokeh

Part 5: Podcast Repurposing (Shorts & Vertical Content)

Jadi kalian bisa pakai close-up angle.

Why Close-Up Angle Critical untuk Repurposing?

Modern podcast workflow: 1 long-form episode → 5-10 short clips

Vertical format requirements:

  • 9:16 aspect ratio (Instagram Reels, TikTok, YouTube Shorts)
  • Tight framing – Head and shoulders (portrait orientation)
  • Single subject focus – One person per frame
  • 30-90 second clips – Highlight best moments

[Insert image: Side-by-side comparison showing horizontal podcast close-up (16:9) cropped to vertical format (9:16) with proper headroom and framing maintained]

Repurposing Strategy

Format Source Angle Aspect Ratio Platform
Full Episode Wide + Medium (multi-cam edit) 16:9 YouTube, Spotify (video)
Highlight Clips Close-up (tight portrait) 9:16 Instagram Reels, TikTok, YouTube Shorts
Teaser Trailer Mix of all 3 angles 16:9 atau 1:1 Instagram Feed, Twitter, LinkedIn
Audiogram Static wide shot 1:1 Instagram Feed, Facebook

Part 6: Team Structure (Minimum 3 People Required)

Podcast Crew Roles

Person 1: Camera Operator – Angle 1 (Wide)

Responsibilities:

  • Monitor wide shot framing (both talents in frame)
  • Ensure consistent headroom dan background composition
  • Watch for talent movement (re-adjust kalau perlu)
  • Backup: Keep eye on overall production flow

Person 2: Camera Operator – Angle 2 & 3 (Medium + Close-Up)

Responsibilities:

  • Monitor medium shot (two-shot atau singles)
  • Monitor close-up angle (tight portrait framing)
  • Ensure focus maintained (especially di f/1.8-f/2.8 shallow DOF)
  • Watch for: Talent keluar frame, focus drift, exposure changes

Person 3: Audio Engineer

Responsibilities:

  • Pre-recording: Mic check, gain staging, mute channels
  • During recording: Monitor levels constantly (prevent clipping)
  • Problem-solving: Fix audio issues real-time (background noise, mic position)
  • Backup: Record multi-track untuk post-production flexibility
[Insert image: Behind-the-scenes showing 3-person crew at work – Camera Operator 1 on wide, Camera Operator 2 monitoring medium/close-up, Audio Engineer at Rode Caster]

Can You Do It Solo or with 2 People?

Solo podcasting:

  • ⚠️ Possible tapi very limiting
  • Use: Locked-off wide shot only, atau single camera dengan auto-focus
  • Audio: Set levels dulu, pray nothing goes wrong
  • Result: Functional tapi tidak dynamic/professional

2-person crew:

  • ⚠️ Workable dengan compromise
  • Person 1: Handle 2 cameras (wide locked-off, monitor medium/close-up)
  • Person 2: Dedicated audio engineer
  • Trade-off: Less coverage, harder untuk catch perfect reaction shots

Part 7: Location dan Background Strategy (Depth Over Flat)

The Flat Background Problem

Kebanyakan orang itu pakai angle flat:

  • ❌ Dinding flat di belakang talent
  • ❌ No depth atau dimension
  • ❌ Boring, “corporate conference room” look

Solution: Create Depth dengan Strategic Location Choice

Our Setup at Sayap Suci:

“Kalau kita lihat dari kamera wide, background-nya ke sini—kita bisa memanfaatkan background yang jauh ke sana karena ada kaca. Di angle kedua ini akan nice bokeh karena akan ada bokeh di belakang talent.”

Creating Depth – Key Principles:

  1. Distance from background
    • Position talent 2-3 meter dari background
    • Allows bokeh at f/1.8-f/2.8 (background blur)
    • Creates separation (talent “pops” dari background)
  2. Layered elements

  3. Foreground: Talent
  4. Mid-ground: Desk, plants, props
  5. Background: Windows, shelves, distant objects
  6. Glass/reflections
    • Windows create depth illusion
    • Reflections add visual interest
    • Natural light glow (even if artificial light used)
  7. Diagonal angles
    • Shoot at 30-45° dari background wall
    • Creates dynamic composition
    • More visual interest daripada straight-on
[Insert image: Top-down diagram comparing FLAT setup (talent close to wall, no depth) vs DEPTH setup (talent 2-3m from background with layered elements)]

Background Examples – Good vs Bad

Bad Background Good Background
Flat white wall 1m behind talent Bookshelves 3m behind with objects at varying depths
Solid color backdrop close to subject Windows dengan view outdoor (natural depth)
Bare wall, no visual interest Plants, artwork, architectural elements with texture
Direct perpendicular angle to background Diagonal angle creating leading lines

Our Specific Setup Breakdown:

Wide shot:

  • Background: Kaca/window ke area luar
  • Depth: ~4-5 meter dari talent ke background visible through glass
  • Result: Context, establish location, depth visible

Medium shot:

  • Slight shift angle untuk different background plane
  • Some bokeh starting at f/2.8-f/4

Close-up shot:

  • Maximum compression dengan 85-135mm lens
  • Background completely out of focus (creamy bokeh)
  • Talent isolated, dramatic separation

“Cuma memang cuma satu doang yang di sini yang kena bokeh. Yang di sini (wide/medium) nanti kalau dilihat pasti hasilnya jauh lebih berbeda dan jauh lebih flat dan boring—tapi karena keterbatasan ruang jadi berpasalan.”

[Insert image: Three-angle comparison showing wide (context with depth), medium (slight bokeh), close-up (maximum bokeh and subject isolation) from Sayap Suci setup]

Part 8: Inspiration – Joe Rogan Experience Podcast Setup
